Since the trip, I have been focusing on my studies and looking out for programs or activities that have similar opportunities like the International Leadership Exchange program. Moreover, I stumbled upon the opportunity to work with my professor on her research. I am currently in Dominican Republic working with Dr. Susan Caplan and a fellow classmate on her extensive research revolving around an app that coaches people with symptoms of Depression. We were able to screen about 90-100 patients and recognize about half of the them with mild to severe symptoms of depression. We have brought awareness to the doctors and community that depression is a disease, and it needs more attention. The Tanzania trip has taught me to seize opportunities no matter how small, as they could lead to life changing experiences. I am more culturally aware and appreciative of the differences in culture of the places I visit. Because of the experienced I have gathered, I am able to compare the economic, social, and governmental situations of Tanzania, Dominican Republic, and The United States. I will continue seeking opportunities that further my knowledge about health in communities, in any form. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to participate in the International Leadership Exchange Program for igniting my interest in travel.
